The definition

What is AI search visibility?

AI search visibility is how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google's AI Overviews mention, cite, or recommend your brand when buyers ask them questions. Traditional search visibility measures whether your pages rank in a list of links. AI search visibility measures whether your brand appears inside the answer itself.

The difference matters because buyers increasingly read the answer instead of the list. When someone asks an assistant "who can help me with this" or "which one should I choose", it names two or three brands. Those names enter the consideration set before any website gets a click. Visibility in AI search engines is therefore a brand metric, measured on the answer layer, with its own signals: mention rate, citation rate, and recommendation rate across a fixed set of buyer questions and models.

The metric moved from rankings and clicks to share of voice, citations, and recommendation. AI search is an early, higher-converting touch point, because the visitor arrives more informed.

AI has no opinion

It reads the sources that already rank and names the brands that recur across them. Change what those sources say about you and you change the answer.

Cited is not recommended

A brand can be a footnote the AI read and still not be the name it gives. In one documented case a brand's own listicle was cited while the AI recommended a rival named inside it.

How AI search works

One question, expanded into many

An AI answer is one question fanned out into many hidden sub-questions. The model forms a hypothesis of what a good answer needs, runs grounding searches for each sub-question, pulls the top-ranked passages, and names the brands that recur. Win the sub-questions and you get named.

Ranking

Puts you on the shelf. The AI summary sits on top of the existing search index, so you have to be in the index it reads.

Cited

Answering the fan-out gets you cited. When your content fits the sub-questions a buyer asks, the AI pulls your passage.

Recommended

Co-occurrence gets you recommended. When you appear across the sources that decide a category, you become the name it gives.

What is AI search visibility?

AI search visibility is how often AI assistants mention, cite, or recommend your brand when buyers ask them questions. It is measured on the answer layer: mention rate, citation rate, and recommendation rate across a fixed question set, tracked per market and per model. Ranking in classic search results is a separate metric; a brand can rank well and still be absent from AI answers.

How is AI search visibility different from SEO?

Traditional search visibility is a ranking position; AI search visibility is a presence inside the answer. SEO gets you ranked. AI search visibility gets you named. We work the layer on top of ranking: the hidden sub-questions an AI expands a query into, and the sources it reads to decide which brands it mentions and recommends. Ranking puts you on the shelf; answering the fan-out gets you cited; appearing across the deciding sources gets you recommended.

What can you control, and what do you have to earn?

Do AI assistants really not see my website?

Most read raw HTML and do not run JavaScript, so content that only appears after client-side rendering can reach them as a blank shell. This is documented for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot; Gemini is the exception. Server-side or static HTML for the content you want cited is the entry ticket, not the prize.

How fast do we see results?

What structured data do I need for AI search visibility?

One JSON-LD graph per page where every entity carries an @id: an Organization defined once (name, url, logo, sameAs pointing at your knowledge-graph entries), a WebSite node, the page-level node (Article, Product, or Service), a BreadcrumbList, and a FAQPage that mirrors questions actually visible on the page. Schema does not buy citations on its own, and no engine reads llms.txt for citation today. What a wired graph does is make your entities unambiguous to the crawlers and search indexes that AI answers are built from, so the content work has something to land on. It is the same convention we run on this site.

How do I track AI search visibility over time?

Fix the question set, then re-run it on a schedule against the same models and markets, storing every answer verbatim with its timestamp and model version. Mention, citation, and recommendation rates only become a trend when the questions stay comparable between runs. Swap the questions every month and you are measuring your edits, the models' drift, and demand shifts all at once, with no way to separate them.
